ALTERNATIVE SALKANTAY TREK - MACHUPICCHU
5 DAYS

First Day: Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa
In the morning, we take a private bus from your hostel to the town of Mollepata where we begin our trek. After a nice three hour hike, we arrive at Cruz Pata, where we have lunch and a nice long, one-hour break before continuing along the trail to Soraypampa (3850m/12,600ft). From this point we can see the first snowy peak, Humatay, before trekking on to our campsite, where we arrive at about 5:30pm. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Second Day: Soraypampa - Chaullay
After breakfast, we have a roughly four hour trek to the first mountain pass, that of the mountain Salkantay, situated at over 4540m/14,900ft, and the highest point on our trek. We take a short break here to soak up the wonder of this beautiful, snowy peak. From here, we drop down for about four hours to arrive in Chaullay, where we put up our camp (2900m/9500ft). (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Third Day: Chaullay – Santa Teresa
We have breakfast and begin our trek to Collpapampa Pass. We take a trail that reaches along the edge of the mountain and passes by a variety of orchids and different types of plants and fruiting trees, such as mangoes and bananas. We see impressive waterfalls and, after about a five hour walk, we arrive at a place known as The Beach. From here we take a forty-five minute truck ride to Santa Teresa, at 1,645m/5400ft. Santa Teresa is fondly known for its crystal clear hot springs, which, if you so choose, you can take advantage of. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Fourth Day: Santa Teresa – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes.
At about 7:30am, after breakfast, we begin our two hour trek to the beginning of the train line. We have lunch here at a family restaurant and then passengers have the option to take a short train ride or to walk along the scenic river to reach the town of Aguas Calientes. Aguas Calientes is the final town before Machupicchu and it is here where we spend a nice night in a hotel and get a good rest before going up to the ruins of Machupicchu in the morning. Once again, there are hot springs which you can take advantage of and a small waterfall which we can hike up to and visit. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner)
Fifth Day: Aguas Calientes – Machupicchu - Cusco
Early in the morning, we have breakfast in the hotel and then trek up to Machupicchu. In Machupicchu, we have a guided tour of two hours to make sure you see and learn about the most important sites within the ruin. Passengers are then free to explore on their own. Many people like to hike up the neighboring rocky peak, Waynapicchu, or hike out to the cave known as Temple of the Moon. In the afternoon, we descend back down to Aguas Calientes and take the train back to Cusco, arriving at about 8:20pm, and are dropped off back at your hotel. (Breakfast)
